Friends Hospital Failed to Report Healthcare Associated Infections

The Pennsylvania Department of Health found that Friends Hospital was not in compliance with infection reporting requirements under the state’s Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (MCARE) Act. The Department of Health found that three out of twelve patient records sampled showed evidence of healthcare associated infections (two oral/mouth and one upper respiratory), but none of them were reported to the proper authorities. Four other patients were started on antibiotics to address an outbreak of thrush, but they were not recorded in the facility’s infection surveillance log.
