New Patient Waited Over 28 Hours To Be Seen by Psychiatrist

Summit Oaks Hospital was cited by the New Jersey Department of Health for deficiencies related to psychiatric services, when it found that the facility failed to ensure that all patients were evaluated by a psychiatrist, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant within 24 hours of admission to the unit. In response to a complaint, the Department of Health examined a patient’s medical records and found that the patient was in the facility for 28 hours and 48 minutes before being evaluated by a psychiatrist. The patient was admitted at 12:12 PM and was not seen by a psychiatrist until 5:00 PM the following day. To address this deficiency, the facility agreed to reeducate physicians and to audit a minimum of 50 charts for at least 3 months.
