Proper Care Not Provided for Two Patients with Anorexia

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) cited Hickory Trail Hospital for several violations following an unannounced investigation of a complaint.

The facility was found to have failed to develop and maintain updated nursing care plans in the case of a patient diagnosed with anorexia. The patient’s records showed two instances where she refused to eat dinner, but there was no indication that any intervention was provided or that her food consumption was tracked.

CMS also cited the facility for failing to ensure nursing personnel administered doses of medication as ordered. A second patient diagnosed with anorexia and PTSD missed two scheduled doses of psychiatric medications (Abilify and Depakote) during a three day period.

As a result, Hickory Trail was required to submit a plan of correction.
