San Marcos Treatment Center cited for having 1 staff assigned to 8 children

San Marcos Treatment Center was cited by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) for violations related to insufficient staffing ratios, after 1 staff member was responsible for at least 8 residents for more than one hour.

DFPS found that the facility did not meet the standard staffing ratio required by Texas law, which stipulates at least 1 staff member for 5 children. In this instance, the facility only had 1 staff member caring for at least 8 residents for an hour or more. During that time, a diabetic child consumed more dessert than was permitted and the child’s sugar level rose to 570 the following morning.

Technical assistance was given on-site by DFPS inspectors.
